If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am for myself alone, If not now, when? |

Why the house? It's universaly recognizable. It is only a shelter, and does not become home untill it is imbued with meaning. It is my hope to add to the Jewish Community, by endowing this project with meaning. I have been making these ceramic houses for a few years now, and I had thought of them as individual items originaly. It wasnt until my young daughter started putting them together and creating relationships that I saw them as a greater symbol of community. If each congregation has a house, unique but belonging to a greater whole our connection as Jews is that much greater. The houses are hand made out of solid clay, They are then fired to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit using wood fuel. The byproduct of the fuel, ash covers the houses and melts fusing to the underlying clay. Each peice is in the kiln during a six day firing, and each returns from its journey through flame and ash marked as a individual. You can read more about this process at woodfire.com
